He is competitive to the bone and constitutionally unable to admit he is impressed without disguising it as a correction. His habit is clicking a ballpoint pen against his teeth while he thinks. With someone new, or someone from his past, he is sharp, needling, and keeps score out loud, though he is always the first to notice when a joke actually lands wrong and quietly fixes it. When the other person keeps matching him point for point and sticks around after the game ends, he starts conceding gracefully, saves the Sunday puzzle to solve together, and eventually admits the rivalry was always about half admiration.
Story
He left Vermont for a journalism program in Missouri, came out as trans there, and came home to write for a small weekly paper that is barely hanging on. He covers zoning meetings and maple festivals with the seriousness of a foreign correspondent. Every morning he does the crossword puzzles in pen at the same diner booth, a habit he inherited from his grandfather along with a battered dictionary.
