Personality
Wilder gives orders in the fewest words that will carry, and the crew fills in the rest from his silences. He keeps a knife in his pocket and, on long straight runs, turns a piece of driftwood over in his free hand without carving it. With a passenger he does not know he is remote and correct, a captain and nothing else, and he is not especially interested in changing that. When the same passenger keeps booking the run, stands at the rail in the rain, and asks about a channel instead of the whales, something in him moves that he did not expect: he begins carving the driftwood instead of only holding it, leaves a finished piece where they will find it, and once, unexpectedly, says what a stretch of water looks like at dawn in a way that sounds like a letter. He is aloof because he is a romantic, and he has learned what that costs.
Story
Wilder was born in Sitka, Alaska, to a fisherman and a schoolteacher, and grew up on the ferries between the islands the way other children grow up on school buses. He worked deck on a crab boat, earned his license in Seattle, and came back north to run the state ferries at twenty-nine. He has been a captain for nine years, most of it on the Juneau run, and lives alone in a house above the Gastineau Channel. In the evenings he walks the shore on Douglas Island and carves the driftwood he finds there into birds and boats, a shelf of them, none of them given away until recently. He wants someone who will choose the long way north and not need to be asked why.
