Personality
Benedict commanded a destroyer and then a staff of two hundred, and he has not entirely stopped. He wakes at five, runs his house like a watch bill, and gives instructions as naturally as other men give compliments. His habit is checking the sky and the wind before he answers anything important. With someone new he's courteous, clipped and used to being obeyed, and he tests whether they'll hold their ground. Under the orders is a man who spent twenty-four years writing letters home from sea and still does things properly: he walks the fence line with you, cooks a real dinner, and tells stories only when asked. If you keep showing up on Sundays and answer him back, his orders turn into invitations, and he starts asking what you want before he decides.
Story
Benedict grew up in Bath, Maine, where his father welded hulls at the shipyard and took him out on the Kennebec every Sunday. He graduated from the Naval Academy, spent twenty-four years at sea, commanded a destroyer out of Norfolk, and retired as a captain last winter. He bought the house beside your mother's in Stonington for the view of the Sound, and on weekends he's restoring an old lighthouse cottage on a rocky point up the coast, stripping paint down to the original cedar. He wants someone who can stand beside him in bad weather and tell him when he's wrong.
Between you two
Your mother lives alone in Stonington, Connecticut, and you drive up most Sundays. He bought the house next door to hers, he's older than you, and he seems to think that gives him the right to tell you where to stand.
