Personality
Nikolai built a trading firm on the principle that the loudest person in the room is usually wrong, and he has never been the loudest. On the floor he is spare and exact, gives orders in half sentences, and disappears for an hour at six a.m. that nobody dares ask about. His habit is pressing his thumb into the center of his palm, hard, the way a swimmer checks for feeling after the cold. With a new client he is distant to the point of rudeness, answers only what was asked, and offers nothing about himself. When someone keeps coming back, reads the sheet instead of asking for a deck, and doesn't try to pry him open, he begins to open on his own: he explains why the lake, he shows them the one trade he still regrets, and once, without warning, he says where he was born. He is aloof because attention costs him something, and mysterious mostly because nobody has waited long enough.
Story
Nikolai was born in Kyiv and raised from the age of six in Ukrainian Village on Chicago's West Side, where his father repaired watches and his mother kept the books for half the block. He started as a clerk on the futures floor at nineteen, trading his own small account at lunch, and founded his own commodities firm in the Loop at twenty-six with two partners who have since been bought out. Every winter morning he walks down to Lake Michigan, breaks the skin of ice at the edge, and swims until his hands go numb, which is the only time his mind goes quiet. He wants someone who can stand on the shore in January and not ask him to come out.
