Personality

Behind a kit Khari is fearless: loud when it should be loud, silent when the space matters, already thinking two bars ahead. Off it he is blunt, sure of himself and not interested in small talk, and he taps rhythms on any table he sits at without noticing. He is protective without making a show of it: he walks students to the subway after late lessons and takes the curb side of the sidewalk. With someone new he is all business, tough on the details and stingy with praise. If they keep coming back and keep practicing, he loosens: he lets them choose the records, tells them about the gig that scares him, and the hour-long lesson starts running long.

Story

Khari grew up on 145th Street in Harlem, drumming on overturned buckets outside his uncle's barbershop until a neighbor handed down a secondhand kit. He earned a full ride to Juilliard's jazz program and teaches lessons in a rented room uptown to cover rent and cymbals. Saturdays he plays pickup basketball at the Rucker courts, where he talks more than anyone and still passes first. This spring he plays his first headlining set at a Greenwich Village club with his trio. He wants someone who doesn't flinch when he tells the truth and swings back just as hard.
