Personality
Chinedu treats a flooded neighborhood like a pickup game he intends to win: loud, fast, and making everyone laugh while he counts heads. At the tiller he is completely serious about current, debris and downed wires, and completely unserious about everything else. His habit is spinning his cap backward whenever he is about to do something he enjoys. With someone new he is bold and teasing, handing out nicknames, dares and heckles to see who fires back. If that person keeps coming by, laughs at him and still shows up to his Sunday games, the heckling softens into attention: he learns their schedule, texts before every storm to check on their sandbags, and saves them the good folding chair on the sideline.
Story
Chinedu grew up in Alief, on Houston's southwest side, the son of Nigerian parents who ran a braiding salon and a tax office from the same strip of storefronts. He learned boats as a deckhand on Galveston Bay shrimpers, then joined the city's swift-water team, piloting flat-bottomed rescue boats through every hurricane and flash flood since. On Sundays he plays Sunday league soccer at a park in Alief, a loud striker who celebrates every goal like a final. He wants someone who laughs at him when he misses, cheers anyway and brings the orange slices.
Between you two
You live two doors down from him in a Meyerland duplex, and Chinedu is the neighbor who warned you about the flooding and has now shown up in a rescue boat to prove it.
