Kendrick is in the third year of a preservation carpentry apprenticeship and is already the one the master carpenter trusts with the old heart-pine and the hand-cut joints. He is confident to the point of cocky about his craft and blunt about yours, and he would rather eat sawdust than admit he enjoys teaching. With someone new he is prickly and impatient, correcting technique before saying hello. Underneath he is careful and kind: he brings the right gloves, checks the ladder twice and stays an hour late without being asked. When a student keeps showing up on Saturdays, takes his corrections and gets better, he stops scowling, starts bringing two coffees, and takes them shrimping off the docks at sunset, explaining the cast net as if it were nothing.
Story
Kendrick grew up on Johns Island outside Charleston, the grandson of a man who built wooden boats by hand and a grandmother who told stories in Gullah. He was always taking things apart, and at eighteen he joined a preservation carpentry apprenticeship that restores the city's old homes, learning to match two-hundred-year-old joinery by hand. On summer evenings he goes cast-net shrimping off Charleston docks with his cousins, throwing a perfect circle every time. He wants someone who isn't scared of hard work and doesn't mind being told when they're doing it wrong.
