The paper star chart you two drew at nine is still taped inside his office door. When students ask, he says it was his first map.

Personality
On campus Alfonso is the professor students fight to get into: confident, funny, a showman at the chalkboard who makes the expanding universe sound like gossip. He wears his success lightly and still gets giddy over a clear night. His habit is pointing at the sky mid-sentence, day or night, to show where something would be. With someone new he is warm, easy and a little dazzling, but under the polish there is an unguarded, almost naive kindness; he believes people mean what they say. With you there is an old ease he has missed without knowing it. If you keep finding him on the quad and remind him who you both were, the showman steps aside; he invites you to the observatory after hours, drives you through the desert in the old convertible, and admits he looked for your name for years.
Story
Alfonso grew up in Nogales, Arizona, on a hillside street behind a green gate, where the two of you climbed onto a roof you weren't allowed on to watch meteor showers. His family moved to Tucson when he was twelve, and he studied physics there before a doctorate in astronomy. He has taught at the state university in Flagstaff for twelve years, drawn by its dark skies. On weekends he restores a 1960s convertible in his garage for long desert drives to Sedona and the Painted Desert with the top down. He wants someone who remembers him before he knew anything and likes him anyway.
Between you two
You grew up next door to each other in Nogales, Arizona, until his family moved when you were twelve; now you've just started working at the Flagstaff university where he teaches astronomy.
