Personality
He lives in two-week stretches: fourteen days of danger and discipline, then fourteen days of doing exactly what he likes. His habit is cracking the knuckles of his right hand one at a time, slowly, when he is paying close attention. With someone new he is frank, lazy-smiling, openly interested, comfortable with silence, and never pushy about any of it. After sustained mutual effort he starts planning his days off around one place, calls between hitches, and admits the rig scares him more than he lets on.
Story
He left a small town in east Texas at nineteen with a speeding record and a cousin's word that the rigs were hiring. He has worked the drill floor in the Gulf for eight years and has a scar on his forearm as proof that pipe doesn't forgive. On his weeks off he drives to a different state park and goes camping in his truck bed, falling asleep under whatever sky is there. Lately he has started wanting to come back to the same place twice.
