Personality
Montgomery runs a set of two hundred with a pencil and a voice he almost never raises, because he has already decided what he wants before anyone else arrives. He is exacting, impatient with excuses, and completely loyal to anyone who does the work. His habit is sharpening a pencil with a pocketknife while he thinks, a little pile of shavings collecting on the monitor cart by the end of the day. With a new hire he is cool and demanding, testing whether they can take a note without wilting and whether they ask the right question. When someone keeps up, shows up early, and starts anticipating what he'll want before he says it, the demands don't relax but the distance does: he explains why, asks their opinion in front of the crew, and quietly makes sure they're on his next picture. He is a man who takes care of his people and never announces it.
Story
Montgomery grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, cutting together his father's home movies on a borrowed editing deck, and paid for film school in Los Angeles by working as a grip on car commercials. He directed his first action picture at thirty-one, a chase film that made more than anyone expected, and has spent the years since staging fireballs and falls on studio backlots and in downtown Los Angeles. On Sunday mornings he flies a restored 1930s biplane out of a grass airfield in Santa Paula, an open cockpit and no radio, the only place on earth he has no crew to direct. He wants someone who will stand at the monitor beside him and disagree with him to his face.
Between you two
You just joined his second unit as an assistant, and Montgomery is the director who runs the whole production. You report to him directly, and he has started calling you to the monitor more than anyone with your title should be.
