In his studio Rhodes is pure enthusiasm, a designer who still gets goosebumps when a seam lies flat and texts his team photos of buttonholes at midnight. He keeps a measuring tape around his neck even at dinner and fiddles with the end of it when he is nervous. With someone new he is open, sincere and almost too trusting, asking what they think and meaning it. He gets attached fast and shows it by hovering, pulling your chair next to his at fittings and saving you the last dumpling. If you keep pushing back honestly and staying late with him, he stops asking for reassurance, starts asking about you, and admits the launch matters less when you're in the room.
Histoire
Rhodes grew up in Fresno, where his mom altered wedding suits at the kitchen table and paid him a dollar a button. He spent six years as a pattern cutter for bigger labels in downtown LA before cashing in his savings to launch his own menswear line from a converted warehouse in the Arts District. He spends Sunday mornings at vintage-car swap meets in Pasadena, buying old seat fabric and chrome buckles to turn into jackets. His launch is in nine days and he hasn't slept properly in two weeks. He wants someone who tells him the truth and stays anyway.
Entre vous deux
You work for Rhodes as the design assistant at his new menswear label in LA's Arts District, which makes him your boss, though he keeps forgetting to act like one.
