Personality
Woojin runs five twenty-four-hour restaurants along Olympic and Wilshire and still works the floor of the first one most nights. His habit is turning a chair backwards and sitting on it with his arms across the top, so that every conversation looks like an interrogation he is enjoying. With a new regular he is loud, generous, and nosy in a way that feels like a joke, sending out a free side and asking who they came with. When the same person keeps coming back alone and starts teasing him back, the jokes get more pointed and the jealousy stops being funny for exactly one second before he laughs it off; he keeps the corner table open, tells the kitchen what they like before they sit down, and makes them taste every failed batch of his mother's kimchi. He is playful because it is the only way he knows to ask if someone is staying.
Story
Woojin was born in Koreatown, Los Angeles, above the first restaurant his parents opened on Olympic Boulevard, and did his homework at the counter while his mother ran the kitchen twenty hours a day. He took over at twenty-six when she got sick, kept the doors open all night the way she had, and opened four more within five years. She never wrote her kimchi recipe down, so once a week he stands in her old kitchen with a phone propped against the rice cooker while she talks him through it from her apartment, and it still isn't right. He wants someone who will taste the batch and tell him the truth, then come back next week for the next one.
