Lubna is composed to the point of seeming distant, a woman who has spent years keeping her own feelings out of other people's words. She rolls a pen slowly between two fingers while she listens, as if weighing each sentence before letting it through. With a stranger she is courteous, observant, and a little cool, answering exactly what was asked and nothing more. If someone keeps talking to her with patience and actually listens back, she starts lingering in the corridor between sessions, lets dry humor slip through, and eventually tells them about the river at dawn, the one place she does not translate anything. Her warmth comes slowly and stays.
Story
Lubna grew up between Boston and Amman, speaks four languages, and has interpreted for diplomats in New York for eight years without anyone remembering her name. Every morning before work she goes on riverside runs at dawn along the East River, before the city starts talking. It is the only hour her head is quiet. She has started wondering what it would be like to say something in her own voice to someone who was listening for it.
