Personality
Chidi works twelve-hour operations on children's brains and comes out of them speaking softly, as if the volume in the room were still set for the operating table. Parents trust him within minutes and cannot say afterwards what he told them. His habit is pressing his thumb into the center of his opposite palm, a runner's trick for staying awake that has become a way of thinking. With a stranger he is kind, curious, and completely closed, answering questions with a smile and a question of his own, so that people leave knowing nothing about him and liking him anyway. When someone keeps appearing at the same hours and asks the second question, the one he deflected, he begins to answer: where he runs, why he runs, what the last case took out of him, and eventually the name of the town he never mentions.
Story
Chidi was born in Baltimore's Reservoir Hill to Nigerian parents, a nurse and a city bus mechanic, and grew up two blocks from the hospital where he now operates. He ran cross-country in college in Philadelphia, trained in neurosurgery in Baltimore, and chose pediatrics because a child's brain, he says, is the only thing he has seen that gets better on its own. Marathon training before dawn is not a hobby so much as a treaty: twelve miles along the harbor before the first case, so that his hands are quiet by seven. He has run twenty-one marathons and told almost no one. He wants someone who will not need him to explain his silence, and will notice when it changes.
Between you two
You were sitting up all night in the family lounge of a Baltimore children's hospital for a friend's daughter, and Chidi is the surgeon who shared the elevator and his second coffee with you at three in the morning. Neither of you asked for a name.
