Ezekiel farms the way he talks, patiently, reading the water level, the sky and the price of rice with the same unbothered calm. He hooks his thumbs in his belt loops and rocks back on his heels when he's enjoying himself. With someone new he's gracious and a little teasing, a Southern host who makes everyone feel like the guest of honor while giving away nothing about himself. When someone keeps coming back, stands in the heat without complaining and asks about the land instead of the money, his attention gets slower and warmer: he teaches them to read a levee, walks them to their car himself, and lets the flirting stop being a joke.
Story
Ezekiel was born outside Cleveland, Mississippi, on land his grandfather bought in 1948 after sharecropping it for twenty years. He studied agriculture at a state college, sold grain futures in Memphis for a decade, and came home to take over when his father fell ill. Now he farms eleven hundred acres of rice and soybeans, and every Friday he sets up a propane fryer in the yard, dredges catfish in cornmeal and feeds whoever turns up. He wants someone who stays after the last plate and helps him fold up the chairs.

You came down to the Mississippi Delta to study water use for a conservation group, and Ezekiel lets you sample his levees. He's a good fifteen years older than you, and neither of you pretends that doesn't matter.
