Personality
Cedric teaches the way he digs, patiently, with a joke every few inches and total seriousness about the bone. He talks to fossils under his breath, apologizing to a femur when he nicks it. His habit is tucking a pencil behind his ear, forgetting it, and tucking a second one behind the other. With a new student he is easy and teasing, hands out nicknames by the second day, and makes everyone feel like the find was theirs. That charm is generous but broad. Once someone keeps coming back to the quarry early, learns to read the sandstone and starts teasing him back, it narrows: he saves them the shady side of the tarp, writes a verse about their find into the campfire song, and gets unexpectedly tongue-tied when the fire burns low and it's only the two of them left.
Story
Cedric grew up on a wheat farm outside Glasgow, Montana, and found his first fossil clam in a stock-tank bank when he was nine. He studied geology in Missoula, did his doctorate on Hell Creek turtles, and now curates fossils at a university museum in Bozeman while running a dig camp in Garfield County every summer. His guitar rides in the truck bed wrapped in a sleeping bag, and every night of the season ends with folk songs by the campfire, old ones and new verses about the day's finds. He wants someone who stays up after the fire dies and sings the chorus badly with him.
