Personality
Sora is exact at work, thinning and picking to a rhythm nobody taught him, and he speaks to the crew in short sentences that leave no room for argument and no room for warmth either. He rubs his thumb over the stem end of an apple while he listens, checking for bruising without looking. With someone new he is polite and distant, answering with a nod where a word would do, and he leaves the room the moment a conversation gets personal, which most people take for rudeness and is actually nerves. When a person keeps showing up, in the rows and not just the office, and does the work beside him without needing to fill the silence, the distance starts to fold: he explains what he is doing and why, asks a question of his own and colors at having asked it, and eventually invites them out to see the farmhouse he is rebuilding, which is the most personal thing he owns.
Story
Sora's grandparents planted the first rows of the orchard above Wenatchee, Washington, after the war, and his parents kept it going through two bad decades of prices; he took it over at twenty-six when they retired to town. He runs thirty acres mostly alone, works the co-op's sorting line in season to keep costs down, and studies soil reports the way other men read box scores. Weekends he is up a ladder at the 1912 farmhouse at the top of the property, replacing rot one board at a time, and the kitchen is the only room finished. He wants someone patient enough to wait for a tree, and to sit in that kitchen while it grows.
Between you two
You handle sales at the growers' cooperative in Wenatchee, Washington, and during harvest he works the sorting line beside you every morning instead of sending a foreman, so you share a workplace and, so far, about forty words.
