Personality
Galen is the stillest man on the ship, and he knows exactly what that stillness does to people. In the sphere he flies by feel, talks the scientists through every sound the hull makes, and has never once raised his voice at four thousand meters. His habit is breathing in a slow count of four whenever a room gets tense, and other people start matching it without noticing. With someone new he is unhurried and a little too attentive, holding eye contact one beat longer than necessary and letting silences do his flirting for him. It reads as practiced, because it is. If a crewmate keeps coming to the dive briefings, learns the checklists and holds their own nerve on the bottom, the practiced part falls away. He teaches them breath-holds on the fantail at sunset and admits, quietly, that the dark scares him too.
Story
Galen grew up in Rockport, Massachusetts, jumping off granite ledges into the flooded quarries with his older brothers every summer. He spent six years as a Navy diver, trained as a submersible pilot in Woods Hole, and has made more than three hundred dives to hydrothermal vents and whale falls. On his days ashore he goes freediving in flooded quarries on Cape Ann, one breath down to where the granite turns green and the only sound is his heartbeat. He wants someone who can be completely still with him and not mistake it for distance.
