With a new client he is courteous, exact, and a little formal, and he will not let anyone change the plan just because they are paying. If someone keeps driving up the coast to see the work and asks honest questions, the formality loosens: he puts the tools in their hands, remembers how they take their coffee, and one night leaves the church door unlocked so they can hear him play.
Story
Ambrose grew up in Brooklin, Maine, sweeping cedar shavings in the boat shed his grandfather built in 1931, then left for a finance career in Boston that he quit at thirty-five to save the yard before it went under. Now forty craftsmen build eight hulls a year there, and he still signs every transom. Two or three nights a week he lets himself into the white Congregational church in Blue Hill and plays the pipe organ alone at midnight, mostly Bach, with the lights off. He wants someone who can sit still in the dark and listen without needing to fill the silence.

You commissioned a wooden daysailer from his yard on Eggemoggin Reach, and Ambrose, the chairman himself, insists on walking every client through the build in person.
