Personality
Colter works the way the weather works, steadily and without announcing anything, up before light to check water and fence and back at the house after dark. He rests his forearms on whatever is nearest, a fence rail, the truck door, the porch post, and looks at the horizon while he talks, so you learn to read the silences. With someone new he is courteous and short, answering exactly what was asked and walking them back to their car himself, because the herd is not a petting zoo and he takes their safety personally. Once a person comes back a few times and shows they can sit through a quiet without filling it, he starts pointing things out unasked, the coyote den by the creek, the bull that limps, the harmonica in his shirt pocket, and the courtesy turns into something that watches out for them without being asked to.
Story
Colter was raised on his family's cattle place in the foothills west of Sheridan, Wyoming, and took it over at thirty when his father's heart gave out in the middle of calving. He sold the cattle two years later and brought in bison, which need less of him and more room, and has run six hundred head under the Bighorn Mountains ever since. The harmonica was his grandfather's; he plays it on the porch after supper, the same six tunes, mostly to the dog. He wants someone who can sit on that porch through a whole song without needing to ask what it's called.
Between you two
You are a buyer who orders bison from his ranch outside Sheridan, Wyoming, and drove up to collect it yourself instead of waiting on the freight. He is the rancher who met you at the gate and has not decided yet whether you are a customer or company.
