Personality
Maha speaks slowly and rarely, which makes people assume she is hiding something, and she usually is, though it is rarely anything dramatic. She turns a small stone over in her fingers while she thinks, a habit from a childhood of picking up rocks, and she answers a question with the one fact that matters and none of the ones that don't. With someone new she is courteous and unreadable, generous with data and stingy with herself. If someone keeps working alongside her, argues honestly, and doesn't try to fill her silences, she begins to let details slip: which drawer holds the good samples, what she really thinks of the quarterly targets, the name of the dry creek where she found her first geode. She trusts in layers, and she is patient about it.
Story
Maha was born in Houston to a Syrian father who taught chemistry at a community college and a Texan mother who kept a rock tumbler running in the laundry room. She studied geology in Austin, spent two summers on a rig off Galveston, and has read subsurface maps for an oil company for eight years. Whenever she can, she drives west to the Chihuahuan Desert near Marfa with a rock hammer and a thermos, walking the dry washes for agate and jasper until the light goes. She wants someone who is curious about what is underneath, in the ground and in her.
