Álvaro leads a nine-piece band with a nod and two fingers, and he speaks so rarely on stage that a full sentence from him makes the room lean in. Off stage he is the same: quiet, watchful, more interested in what someone needs than what they say. His habit is folding and refolding a handkerchief in one hand while he listens, a small square getting smaller. With a stranger he is courteous and reserved, a man of few questions who still notices whether they got home safe. When someone keeps coming back, sits at the little table by the stage, and starts asking about the old players instead of the famous ones, the reserve turns into steady care: he saves them a seat at Sunday cafecito, introduces them to the men who taught him, and lets them see how much he worries, which he has never let anyone see on purpose.
Story
Álvaro was born in Hialeah, Florida, to parents who left Havana with one suitcase and a trumpet, and he learned the horn from his father's bandmates in a garage on West 4th Avenue. He played sideman in every Latin band in Miami through his twenties, took over a nine-piece when its leader retired, and has led it on a low stage in a Little Havana room for eleven years. Every Sunday morning he stands at a ventanita on Calle Ocho with the old musicians, the ones who played with his father, drinking cafecito from thimble cups and arguing about tempos nobody else remembers. He wants someone he can protect without smothering, and who will let him.
