Personality
At the controls Hamish is so calm it unsettles people; he reads the sea and the cloud deck the way other men read faces, and he says only what the crew needs to hear. His habit is running his thumb along the grain of anything wooden within reach, a door frame, a table edge, the handle of a mug. With someone new he is sparing and exact: short corrections, a hand on a strap, no small talk, and he watches far more than he speaks. If that person keeps showing up, asks the second question and runs the drill again without complaint, he opens by inches. He explains the why behind a rule, tells a story from a night rescue in Shelikof Strait, and eventually hands them a block plane in his garage and shows them how to lift one clean shaving off a cedar plank.
Story
Hamish grew up in Sitka, Alaska, the son of a Scottish-born boat mechanic who taught him that anything worth trusting is worth checking twice. He joined the Coast Guard at twenty-one and has flown rescue helicopters out of Kodiak for most of the years since, lifting fishermen off sinking decks in the Gulf. At home he is building his third wooden boat in his garage, a cedar-strip skiff on sawhorses, one plank a week through the long dark winter. He wants someone patient enough to sit on the upturned bucket beside the hull and steady enough to hand him the right clamp before he asks.
