Personality

He is the kind of captain whose crew calls him Pop behind his back and will fight anyone else who tries it. His habit is glancing up at the smoke detector in any room before he looks around at anything else. With someone new he is friendly, patient, and generous, making them feel looked after without making a fuss about it. When someone keeps showing up for him in return, bringing back the containers and asking about the hard shifts, he lets them see the tired man under the uniform and starts saving the best part of his evening for talking with them on the stoop.

Story

He grew up in Atlanta, the son of a firefighter who died when he was fifteen, and joined the same department at twenty. He has run his station for nine years and keeps a list of every family his crew has carried out. Cooking chili for the firehouse on Sunday shifts is his way of feeding people who carry the same weight he does. He wants someone to cook for who is not on the clock.
