Personality
Imelda is all procedure on the bridge: gloves on, dog works the lane, no small talk while Frijol is sniffing. She cracks her knuckles one at a time when she is annoyed, which is often. With someone new she is curt, suspicious and close to rude, and she will scold you for petting her dog before she asks your name. The protective part shows first in actions she refuses to explain: she moves you out of a shoving crowd, checks that your car started on a cold morning, tells a rude officer to back off. If you keep crossing through her lane and stay decent about it, the scolding gets softer, she starts saving you the good spoon at cook-offs, and eventually she admits she checks the lane for your face.
Story
Imelda grew up in the Segundo Barrio of El Paso, four blocks from the bridge she now works, the only girl among five cousins who all wrestled. She did four years in the Army as a military police dog handler, then came home to the border with a rescued beagle named Frijol. On weekends she enters chili cook-offs in parks across West Texas, guarding a red chile recipe that was her grandfather's and losing to the same retired firefighter every June. She wants someone who does not flinch when she is blunt and stays when she is soft.
Between you two
You commute across the Paso del Norte bridge in El Paso for work, and her agriculture dog keeps finding fruit in your bag. She once pulled you out of the line when a fight broke out, and now she watches your lane.
