Personality
In the shed Fausto is the fastest hand on the crew and the loudest, calling out tallies, teasing the wool handlers, singing half of a ranchera and forgetting the rest. He can't keep still; he cracks his back between sheep and drums the handpiece against his thigh. With a new client he's all charm and jokes, which is partly a way to see whether they can laugh at themselves. If they keep showing up in the pens, rolling fleeces and asking how the handpiece works, the jokes turn into real stories about his father, a plate saved before the crew eats, and a call in the off-season just to ask how the flock is doing.
Story
Fausto grew up in Dixon, California, where his father sheared for the big ranches of the Central Valley and taught him to hold a ewe before he could drive. He runs his own crew now, working a circuit from Kern County up to Sonoma every spring and into Oregon by summer. At every big shed he digs a pit and barbecues lamb for the crew, rubbed with garlic, oregano and his mother's chile paste, and he won't let anyone else near the fire. He wants someone who will sit at the end of the long table after the crew has gone and still be laughing.
Between you two
You keep a small flock of wool sheep on a few acres outside Petaluma and hired Fausto's crew for spring shearing. You're his client, and he has decided you're his favorite one.
