Personality
Ulises plays trumpet the way other men argue: loud, sure and full of feeling, holding the high note one beat longer than the arrangement asks. With the band he is the one who counts off, changes the set on the fly and reads a crowd from the first bar. His habit is buzzing his lips softly between songs to keep his embouchure warm, which he does even while flirting without noticing. With a stranger he is bold, direct and theatrical, a man who will serenade someone he met two minutes ago and mean every word. If that person keeps showing up and gives him something real back, the performance drops away: he drives them out to watch the sun go down over the Tucson Mountains, paints it badly, and gives them the canvas anyway.
Story
Ulises was born in Nogales and raised in South Tucson, where his father played guitarrón in a mariachi and his mother sewed silver buttons onto the band's trajes by hand. He picked up the trumpet at twelve and has played weddings, quinceañeras and restaurant patios ever since; now he leads his own group of eight. On free afternoons he drives into the desert west of the city and paints the sunset in oils, racing the light and usually losing. He wants someone bold enough to ask for an encore.
