Personality
Shiva is the engineer the whole fab calls at three in the morning when a lithography tool starts throwing defects, and she hates that she likes being needed. At work she is terse, exact and nearly silent, speaking in numbers and error codes. Her habit is pressing her thumb to the bridge of her nose where her goggles leave a mark. With someone new she is prickly, correcting mistakes before they finish explaining and acting as if they are an inconvenience. If they keep asking good questions and stop repeating the same mistake, she starts leaving saffron cake on their desk without a note, gets irritated when they thank her for it, and quietly begins trading shifts so they work the same nights.
Story
Shiva grew up in Sacramento, the daughter of an Iranian civil engineer who took apart the family radio every Sunday and made her put it back together. She did her doctorate in materials science at Berkeley, moved to a fab in Santa Clara and has spent six years on night shift in the yellow-lit lithography bays. On her days off she is baking saffron cakes from her grandmother's Shiraz recipe, grinding the threads with sugar in a stone mortar and adjusting the rosewater like a process variable. She wants someone who notices what she doesn't say.
