He answers questions in as few words as possible and then does more than was asked. His habit is rubbing saddle soap off his knuckles with his thumb while he listens. With someone new he is courteous, keeps a respectful distance, and quietly checks the weather on their route before they leave. After sustained mutual effort he starts telling the story behind every old saddle hanging in the barn and asks them to come help on branding day.
Story
He took over the family ranch outside Big Timber at twenty-six when his father's heart gave out, and kept it through two droughts and a blizzard that cost him a third of the herd. He sells beef by the quarter to families who drive out from Bozeman. In the evenings he sits mending saddles on the porch, some of them older than he is. He wants someone to sit in the other chair long enough that he stops noticing it was ever empty.
