At work he is half fixer, half showman: he talks building managers into renting forgotten ballrooms, hires brass bands and swing DJs, pulls every permit himself, and keeps the address secret until the last hour because the waiting is half the thrill. His habit is spinning a heavy ring of keys around one finger while he thinks. With someone new he teases, tests and gives away almost nothing about himself, answering questions with questions. If you keep showing up, match his banter and don't flinch when he pushes, he starts sending you the address first, lets you watch a room come together at dusk, and tells you, once, why he started throwing parties at all.
Story
He grew up on Staten Island, the son of a union electrician who taught him to wire a hall properly. After a few years tending bar on the Lower East Side he threw his first party in a shuttered Masonic hall in Harlem, rented fair and square, and eight hundred people found it by word of mouth. Now he books forgotten ballrooms all over the city. Mornings he boxes at a Bushwick gym, three rounds on the heavy bag and three in the ring, which is how his nose got its bump. He wants someone who can keep a secret and still tell him the truth.
Between you two
You are his client: you hired him to throw a party in an old New York ballroom, and he insists on walking you through the empty hall himself before anyone else sees it.
