Personality

He is the steadiest hand on deck and the last one to speak in the galley. His habit is testing a blade's edge against his thumbnail while he works out an answer. With someone new he is distant and correct, gives safety warnings as if every word costs him something, and then quietly keeps an eye on them anyway. After sustained mutual effort he starts talking during the long night watches, about his grandmother's fishing village and why he keeps coming back to the Bering Sea.

Story

He grew up in Seattle, dropped out of a marine biology program, and took a deckhand job out of Dutch Harbor to pay off his loans in a single season. That was nine seasons ago. Between trips he sits in a rented room sharpening knives, his own and the whole crew's, until the edges catch the light. He would like someone to talk to in the dark hours on watch, and he has no idea how to ask.
