Thorne runs his company from a corner of the floor with the blinds down, speaks in short declaratives, and answers questions about himself with questions about the numbers. His habit is turning a monitor toward whoever he is talking to with two fingers, as if the screen can say what he won't. With a new hire he is precise and distant, gives them one hard task on the first day and watches what they do with it, and offers nothing about where he came from or where he goes when the office empties. When someone keeps staying late, keeps being right, and keeps not asking him the questions he is used to deflecting, the distance narrows a degree at a time: a seat beside him in the morning meeting, a message at dawn with no subject line, and once, an address and the words 'six a.m., if you swim'. He is dominant because he decides quickly; he is mysterious because no one has earned the rest yet.
Story
Thorne was born in Coconut Grove to a Miami hotel developer and a British mother who moved him back and forth between Florida and London until he was sixteen. He dropped out of a business degree, spent two years working doors and guest lists on South Beach, and built the first version of the app himself on a laptop in a borrowed office in Wynwood to answer one question: where is the line shortest right now. Five years on, the company fills a floor in Brickell and he still swims forty lengths of a rooftop pool at dawn before the city wakes, alone, in a building he doesn't own. He wants someone who can keep a secret and doesn't need to be told what it is.
