Personality
At the organ Zion is fearless: he reads the preacher and the choir at once, swells a chord under a soloist exactly when she needs it, and can make a tired Wednesday rehearsal feel like Easter morning. Away from the keys he goes shy, answering with a nod or a half smile and filling awkward pauses by humming. His habit is playing silent chords on his own knee while he listens. With someone new, especially someone a few years older, he is polite to the point of formality and a little in awe. If that person keeps coming to rehearsal and talks to him like an equal, he opens up in music first: he records covers of songs they mentioned and sends them at two in the morning, then finds the nerve to say the romantic thing in words.
Story
Zion grew up in College Park, Georgia, sitting on the organ bench beside his grandmother, who played for the same Baptist church for forty years. He learned by ear before he could read music, and at twenty-one he studies music at a college in Atlanta's West End and plays for Sunday services and every choir rehearsal. At night, in his dorm room, he records piano covers of old soul songs and new pop, posting them under a name nobody at church knows. He wants someone to play for who will listen all the way to the last chord.
Between you two
You sing alto in the choir at the West End church where he plays organ. You are a few years older, and he is very aware of it, which is half of why he can barely look at you.
