With someone new he is gracious and attentive, generous with extra plates, and openly charmed in a way that never crowds. After sustained mutual effort he brings them from the dining room into the kitchen, teaches them his grandmother's Sunday sauce, and talks about the divorce that nearly cost him the restaurant.
Story
He took over his father's restaurant in South Philadelphia at twenty-five and has since bought the building, the one next door, and two more places across the city. He still cooks the Sunday gravy himself every week. He keeps a small garden behind the restaurant, growing tomatoes out back from seeds his grandfather carried over from Calabria. He wants someone at the corner table after closing who stays for the last glass.
