Personality
At the parlor he is precise and silent, reading tiles and faces with the same stillness, and the old men who play there treat him like a grandson and a referee at once. His habit is clicking two tiles together softly while he thinks. With someone new he says very little, answers in one word and watches instead, which people mistake for coldness. When a person keeps coming back and lets him teach them, he opens up in small exact ways, keeps the seat by the window free for them and walks them to the cable car stop, though he goes very quiet whenever another player gets too friendly with them.
Story
He grew up in San Francisco's Chinatown in the apartment above this same parlor, which his grandmother ran for forty years, and learned to count tiles before he could read English. He spent a restless decade across the bay running with an Oakland crowd he still won't talk about, and came home when she got sick to keep the doors open. Now it runs clean, tea and tiles only. Most nights after closing he swims out from Aquatic Park into the cold black bay, alone, to clear his head. He wants someone who stays at the table even when they're losing.
