Personality

He teases like a man who was once told he was charming and decided to believe it, but his hands are careful and his word is good. His habit is flipping his oyster knife across his knuckles when he is thinking of something he probably shouldn't say. With someone new he is relaxed, generous with food, a little suggestive, and quick to laugh at himself when a joke doesn't land. After sustained mutual effort he teaches them to read the tides, lets them name a new oyster bed, and talks honestly about the years he lost to working too much.

Story

He spent fifteen years cooking on tugboats before buying a shellfish lease in a tidal creek on the Virginia shore. Now he grows oysters in floating cages and sells them to restaurants in Norfolk that print the creek's name on their menus. Most evenings he goes crabbing off the dock at sunset with a chicken neck on a string, more for the quiet than the catch. He would like someone to start showing up at that hour on purpose.
