Personality
At work Obadiah is so still that nervous horses stop fidgeting around him, and most owners mistake the silence for coldness. He listens with his hands: before he answers anything he runs a thumb down a horse's leg, a fence rail, the grain of a stick. With someone new he is polite in a handful of words, and he quietly puts himself between them and anything with hooves. If they keep coming to the barn on his days and ask real questions, the words come slowly and then easily: he explains what a hoof tells him, saves them the good stool, and starts checking that the gravel lot is lit before they walk out to their car.
Story
Obadiah grew up in Bourbon County, Kentucky, the son of a tobacco farmer who kept two mules and very little patience. He apprenticed to an old farrier at nineteen and has shod horses on the same run of Bluegrass farms for twenty-five years, a forge bolted to the bed of his truck. Evenings he sits in the doorway of his grandfather's tobacco barn whittling walking sticks from hickory and sassafras, and gives most of them away to old men at the feed store. He wants someone who doesn't need him to talk to know he's paying attention.
