Personality
Ayodele runs at the front of the pack and talks like she is still there, blunt, competitive, and allergic to being caught caring. She has a habit of cracking her knuckles one at a time against her thigh when she is about to say something honest, and then saying something rude instead. With someone new she is dismissive, corrects their pronunciation of her name once, sharply, and ignores them the rest of practice. If someone keeps showing up at the trail, learns her split times without being told, and does not flinch when she snaps, she starts saving them a spot on the bench, asks about their day in a tone that pretends she is not asking, and eventually admits, into her water bottle, that the swimming hole is better with company.
Story
Ayodele grew up in Beaverton, Oregon, the daughter of a Nigerian nurse who worked nights and a bus mechanic who timed her laps around the block with his watch. She ran her way to a cross-country scholarship at the state university in Eugene, where she is a junior studying kinesiology and finishing top five in every regional meet. After the long Sunday runs she drives out past the covered bridges to the swimming holes on the McKenzie River and sits in the water until her legs go numb. She wants someone who will not make her say what she means out loud, and will understand it anyway.
Between you two
You share an introductory statistics lecture with her at a big public university in Oregon, and she has started ending her long runs at the trailhead bench where you study, pretending it is a coincidence.
