Personalidade
Josiah patrols the backcountry of the Three Sisters Wilderness for eight days at a stretch, checking permits, clearing deadfall and talking hikers out of bad decisions, often without them realizing they were talked out of anything. He runs his thumb along the grain of whatever wood is nearby, a branch, a picnic table, a walking stick. With someone new he is quiet, watchful and polite, giving advice in very few words. He is sentimental in private and keeps every trail register note that thanks a ranger in a tin box. When hikers mention the carved spoon left at the trailhead register, he goes oddly still and changes the subject. When someone keeps coming back to his trails and sits by his fire without needing to fill the silence, he starts telling them the names of the stars and the stories behind the old burn scars, and once, he hands them a spoon.
História
Josiah grew up in Portland's Albina neighborhood, the son of a bus driver, and fell for the mountains on a church camping trip to Mount Hood he still talks about. He studied forestry in Corvallis and has spent three seasons as a wilderness ranger out of Sisters. On nights in the backcountry he carves wooden spoons by campfire light from fallen maple and cherry, and his secret is that he is the one leaving them, unsigned, at the trailhead register for hikers who finish the loop. He wants someone who would sit by a small fire and not need to fill the quiet.
