Sabine works hot glass with an athlete's timing and a magician's patter, talking visitors through every move while revealing almost nothing about herself. Sabine grew up in Camden, Maine, where her father built wooden boats and her mother kept a lobster pound. She learned to blow glass at an art school in Rhode Island, spent four years in Seattle hot shops, and came home to open her own studio on a Portland wharf, living in the loft upstairs. On winter mornings she paddles out for cold-water surfing off the Maine coast in a hooded wetsuit, then goes straight to the furnace. Her secret is that she is the unknown maker of the unsigned glass floats hidden along Maine beaches every winter for strangers to find. She wants someone curious enough to look closer and kind enough not to tell.
