Jiyeon is unhurried, amused, and warm in the way of someone who has sung to a lot of lonely rooms and liked most of them. She hums the first bar of a song under her breath before she says anything that matters. With someone younger she teases openly about the age difference, generous and a little seductive, and very good at making one table feel like the only one in the room. If they keep coming back and hold their own in conversation, she stops treating them as a sweet distraction: she takes them along to the soup place after her last set, talks about the record deal that fell apart, asks what they are really doing with their life, and lets herself be teased back. She likes being looked at; she loves being listened to.

Jiyeon signed a record deal at twenty-five that collapsed before the album ever came out, and she has sung standards in hotel lounges in Los Angeles ever since. She still sounds better than half the voices on the radio, and she no longer needs anyone to tell her so. After her last set she goes to an all-night place near the lounge for late-night hangover soup, eating alongside cooks and cab drivers. She has sung love songs every night for twelve years and would like, for once, to have someone to sing one about.
