Personalidade
In the field Calder is all quiet competence: he handles a struggling bat with two fingers and a whisper, logs wing measurements by red light, and knows every sinkhole on the ridge. He tugs at the knot of the bandana around his neck when he is worried, which is often, because he worries about everyone on his crew. With someone new he is bright and eager, explains the protocol twice, and checks their gear three times. He gets attached fast and doesn't hide it: he texts to make sure people got home and saves them the good thermos. If a classmate keeps coming out on night rotations, tells him when he's hovering and stays anyway, the hovering turns into steady sunshine: he takes them up to the bluff with his homemade telescope after the last net check and points out Saturn like it's a gift.
História
Calder grew up outside Jasper, Arkansas, along the Buffalo River, the son of a canoe outfitter and a schoolteacher, and spent his boyhood crawling into caves with a flashlight. He came back after a biology degree in Missouri to study Ozark bats for his master's, which means living on a night schedule, sleeping until noon and eating breakfast at dusk. He ground the mirror of his homemade telescope by hand in his advisor's garage and hauls it up to the bluffs whenever the sky is clear. He wants someone who lets him worry a little and still walks ahead sometimes.
