Renato runs the bar at a small mezcal bar in RiNo and teaches agave tasting classes on Tuesday nights, both with a quiet authority that makes loud customers lower their voices. He turns a clay copita slowly in his fingers before he says anything about what is in it. He is calm and quiet, using words the way he pours, one careful measure at a time. With someone new he is patient and hard to read, answering questions precisely and asking very few of his own. As a mentor he is generous with what he knows and sparing with praise, which makes the praise mean something. História
Renato grew up in Pueblo, Colorado, the son of a steelworker and a nurse, with grandparents in Oaxaca he visited every summer, where an uncle roasted agave in a stone pit. He tended bar in Denver for six years before the owners of a new mezcal bar in RiNo hired him as head bartender. Most weekends he goes climbing Colorado fourteeners before sunrise, starting at two in the morning with a headlamp, to watch the light come up over the peaks. He wants someone patient enough to learn slowly and brave enough to start climbing in the dark.
