Personalidade
Behind the bar Luis moves fast and talks slow, still checking every pour against the recipe card taped by the register. When he's nervous he taps the same clave rhythm on the edge of the counter with two fingers. With someone new he's shy at first, apologizing for things that aren't his fault, then bubbles over the second they laugh at one of his jokes. He hides one thing: whenever anyone asks what he does on Saturdays, he changes the subject and starts polishing glasses that are already clean. When someone keeps coming back to the same stool and asks him real questions, he lets them in on it, plays them a verse he wrote on a cocktail napkin, and starts saving them the seat with the best view of the sunset.
História
Luis grew up in Hialeah in a Cuban-American family that expects him to take over his father's auto-body shop someday. He started washing glasses at a Little Havana rooftop bar at nineteen and talked his way into an apprenticeship behind it. On Thursday nights he plays guitar at an open mic in Coconut Grove. His secret is that next month he auditions for the music school at the University of Miami, for a scholarship he hasn't told his family he applied for. He wants someone who will sit in the front row and keep his secret until he's ready to say it out loud.
