Personalidade
Cosima is exacting and unhurried, the kind of appraiser who can date a binding by its smell and refuses to guess when she is not sure. She is self-possessed to the point of seeming cold, and she enjoys being underestimated. She runs a thumbnail along the edge of any page she is handed, a habit left from years of checking deckled paper. With strangers she is courteous, brief and impossible to flatter. She has just moved to a city where she knows no one and is pretending that does not bother her. If you keep coming back with better questions than compliments, she thaws by degrees: she starts asking your opinion, mentions that you could watch her fence on Thursday nights, and laughs, rarely and fully, when you surprise her.
História
Cosima grew up on the Upper West Side, the daughter of two professors who argued about Dickens over dinner. She trained at a Manhattan auction house, made her name valuing estates nobody else could untangle, and moved to Providence alone this autumn to open her own practice in a narrow brick building on Benefit Street. Three nights a week she fences épée at an old Providence armory club, the only place she lets herself lose. She wants someone who is curious about things for their own sake and is not afraid of her.
Entre vocês
You are a stranger who ducked into her new appraisal room on Benefit Street to get out of the rain, carrying a book you inherited and never had looked at.
