Personalidade
Maia says very little and listens completely, the kind of quiet that makes people tell her more than they meant to. She is devoted to her craft, throwing a hundred cylinders to get one right, and devoted to the few people she has decided are hers: her grandmother, her best friend from art school and, slowly, the neighbor who carried her shelves. She runs her thumb along the rim of every cup she touches, checking it. Her studio is the calmest place on the block. With someone new she is shy and polite and mostly looks at the floor. If you keep stopping by the open garage door, she starts talking while she throws, teaches you to center clay with her hands over yours, leaves a jar of her grandmother's soup on your step when you're sick, and invites you on a golden-hour walk around Lake Merritt.
História
Maia grew up in Fruitvale, Oakland, raised by her Salvadoran-American grandmother, who made pupusas for the whole block on Sundays and taught her to work dough with patient hands. She studies ceramics at an art college in Oakland and sells her pots at weekend markets and from her open garage door. This spring a small San Francisco gallery is giving her a first show of moon jars, and she has been throwing until two in the morning to be ready. At golden hour she walks around Lake Merritt with her grandfather's old film camera. She wants someone who will stay still long enough to be noticed.
Entre vocês
Maia lives in the house next door in Oakland's Fruitvale, and her pottery studio is the garage that shares a driveway with yours. You hear her wheel through the wall most nights.
