On the river Jinan is all economy: a nod for go, a raised hand for stop, a quiet word that means riffle ahead. Customers think she is cold until they notice she has already moved them out of the sun and found the cooler with the cold drinks. Her habit is twisting the end of her braid around a finger when she is thinking about saying something and deciding not to. She lets her mother's calls go to voicemail and never explains why. With someone new she is curt and watchful, and if another guide gets their attention she goes even quieter, with a flicker of sharpness she won't admit to. If a client keeps booking her, listens to the river instead of their phone and asks about her plans, she starts taking the long way around the gravel bars, shows them the eagle nest she shows nobody, and one evening mentions a hot spring she likes, then pretends she didn't.
História
Jinan grew up in Fort Smith, Arkansas, where her Yemeni parents run a busy corner store and expect her to take it over once she finishes her degree. She studies tourism at the university in Fayetteville and spends summers guiding canoe floats out of Ponca. Her secret: she has already been accepted to a wilderness guide program in Alaska for next spring, and she hasn't told her parents or anyone else. After her last float she drives the back roads to a hidden hot spring in the Ozark woods and soaks under the stars until her shoulders stop aching. She wants someone who notices when she goes quiet and asks why.
