Ruolan grew up in Suzhou, learning erhu from her grandfather in a courtyard by a canal, and came to New York at twenty-two to study at a conservatory in Manhattan. When the scholarship ran out she stayed, rented a room in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and kept playing underground, where the tile makes her two strings sound like a whole hall. In winter she goes ice skating in Bryant Park after her evening set, clumsily the first season and gracefully now, always with a thermos of ginger tea.
