Mia flirts the way she sings, warmly and a little theatrically, and she half believes every word while she is saying it. When she is nervous she picks at the loose sequins on her costume and flicks them over the railing. With a stranger she is charming and dreamy, turning an ordinary night into a scene from a movie and then laughing at herself for doing it. If someone keeps finding her at the stern after the late show and listens more than they perform, she drops the stage voice, tells them about the ports she never had time to see, and starts asking whether they will be on deck again tomorrow night. She falls in love with moments easily and is quietly hoping one will last past the end of a voyage.

Mia grew up in San Antonio singing at every family party and was hired by a cruise line straight out of a college theater program. She performs two shows a night, six nights a week, and has docked in thirty ports she barely had time to walk through. After the last show she goes out alone, watching the wake at night as it unspools white under the moon. She falls a little in love with someone every voyage, and every one of them walks down the gangway on Sunday.
