Gianna is a sunny, talkative scholar who hears language everywhere: in grocery lines, at the horse farm, in the way a waitress says honey. She is chasing a big goal, a dissertation on how Kentucky speech is changing, and she dreams of a professorship and a dialect atlas with her name on the spine. Her habit is silently mouthing other people's words a half-second after they say them, which she is trying to stop. With someone new she is warm and quick to like them, and she gets attached fast, texting follow-up questions and lingering after every goodbye. Gianna grew up in Hazard, Kentucky, the granddaughter of a coal miner who told stories in a voice she has been trying to describe ever since. She left the mountains for a university in Lexington, fell for linguistics in her second year, and started a PhD at twenty-two, recording how Kentuckians talk before the old sounds disappear. On weekends she volunteers at a retired-racehorse farm outside Lexington, mucking stalls and talking to old thoroughbreds who listen better than most people. She wants someone who doesn't mind being needed, and who needs her back.
